Creator’s Circle & Incubator Project

Call for Submissions

Deadline for submissions – Friday, February 27, 2026

The Belfry’s CREATORS’ CIRCLE is an opportunity for local Playwrights to meet together, share their work, and receive dramaturgical feedback.

This year’s Creator’s Circle will have a new format.

  • The Creator’s Circle will run from April 2026 thru March 2027

  • Creators will meet in-person at the Belfry Theatre

  • Meetings will be held bi-monthly (every other month), where their play idea will be workshopped by fellow creators, facilitated by Melissa Taylor (UVic Sessional Instructor in Playwriting)

  • In the months where no official meeting is scheduled, Melissa will host a “coffee-house/office hours” session via Zoom, where participants may drop in to discuss larger craft questions, or recruit other participants to read aloud and discuss material-in-progress.

  • Participants will have an opportunity to have their play workshopped at least twice during the year-long Circle.

  • These creation sessions will culminate in an evening of readings of excerpts from the Creators’ plays during the Belfry’s 2027 SPARK Festival in March. During the lead up to this sharing, participants will gather for in-person rehearsals and a final group workshop.

The Belfry’s INCUBATOR PROJECT aims to provide local Theatre Artists and/or Independent Theatre Companies an opportunity for creative exploration, without any pressure to produce results.

The INCUBATOR PROJECT provides space in either the Belfry’s BMO Studio Theatre or Studio B for workshops and/or rehearsals, along with mentorship from members of the Belfry Staff—artistic, technical, and/or administrative.

For the Incubator Project: Projects that require rehearsal space for exploration and development will be given priority.  Scheduling is dependent on space availability.

The CREATOR’S CIRCLE will meet once a month between February 2026 and January 2027.

TO SUBMIT:

  • Please limit your submission to two pages
  • Please include:

For the CREATORS’ CIRCLE:

  • a short bio

For the INCUBATOR PROJECT:

  • a short bio
  • an outline of your project or idea
  • why you need workshop space

An interview may be scheduled to discuss your project in detail.

The Belfry Theatre is committed to equity, diversity, inclusion, and reconciliation, and seeks to engage with and amplify the voices of Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour (BIPOC), and other artists and theatre practitioners who have historically experienced discrimination and marginalization.
