Thanks to our project supporters, the City of Victoria, GVSCU Legacy Fund at the Vancity Community Foundation, the Western Financial Group Communities Foundation, plus an Anonymous Foundation, the Belfry has now achieved a long-term goal of replacing our 30-year-old house lights.
These house lights are the small lights above the audience on both the main floor and balcony of our Patrick Stewart mainstage theatre that illuminate the aisles and let you read your house programs (not to be confused with the stage lights).
The Belfry production team has removed 50 failing lighting fixtures that are dimmer controlled and were lamped with incandescent bulbs at 75 watts each, and replaced them with a completely new LED system. Incandescent bulbs have been discontinued and available stock for purchase was dwindling. So the need for this upgrade had become urgent. Making the transition was a lot of work but well worth it, and would not have been possible without the financial support of these project donors.
The new LED house lights mean improving access and safety for our audience members with steps and uneven surfaces, and has the added benefit of saving the Belfry in energy costs over time as well by 60%.
46,000 annual visitors to the theatre will benefit from this investment, including (to name a few user groups): Belfry 101 High School Program students, people with low vision who access our VocalEye service, and people who take advantage of our Pay-What-You-Want ticket offer to increase access for local audiences to the theatre.
We appreciate this generous support to the Belfry Theatre during our 50th Anniversary Season!
