For Community

Working with our partners, community experts, and the theatre artists involved in our productions we’ve crafted some meaningful opportunities to engage with our theatre.

The Belfry is committed to equity, diversity, inclusion, and reconciliation, and seeks to engage with and amplify the voices of Indigenous, Black, People of Colour (IBPoC) and other artists and theatre practitioners who have historically experienced discrimination and marginalization.

Community Theatre Nights
Arrow

Community Theatre Nights are an opportunity for diverse or equity-seeking community groups or organizations to play host to other members of their community at the Belfry Theatre.

Each event is tailor-made to meet the needs and desires of each individual community, while sharing certain elements, including:

  • Tickets to a Belfry production
  • An Afterplay conversation with the actors
  • Use of the lobby post-show with refreshments.

Our goal is to make members of all communities feel welcome inside the Belfry.

We want to ensure that the Belfry is a safe environment for everyone.

Through Community Theatre Nights, we want a wide variety of communities to take ownership of the building.

A community theatre night is an opportunity to celebrate diversity, inclusion, belonging, and accessibility, while enjoying a great piece of theatre!

Talkbacks
Arrow

On the third Thursday of the run of each Mainstage production in our subscription series, the actors return to the stage following the performance for a Question-and-Answer session with the audience. It’s a great opportunity to learn more about the play and get a glimpse into the actors’ process.

Talkbacks last approximately 20 minutes. You don’t have to attend the performance to attend the Talkback (but each one will start at a different time, as each production is a different length).

For Talkback start times – call 250-385-6815.

Community Partnerships
Arrow

We work with a range of partners to help make the Belfry more inclusive and more engaged with our community.

Inter-Cultural Association of Greater Victoria (ICA)

Through our partnership with ICA, we offer immigrant students, for whom English is a second language, tickets to a performance at the Belfry. Before the performance, a member of the Belfry staff meets with the students and gives them an introduction to the play.

Canoo

As a member of Canoo, the Belfry offers free admission to new citizens during their first year in Canada.

Canoo (formerly known as the Cultural Access Pass program) is a mobile app that helps new Canadian citizens celebrate their citizenship by providing free admission to over 1,400 museums, science centres, art galleries, parks, theatres, and historic sites.

Belfry@UVic

Four to six times during each season, the Belfry brings one of our guest artists to the UVic campus, to address students in the Department of Theatre. One of the Department’s professors interviews the guest (or guests), and then gives the students time to ask questions.

Recent guests include Andy Moro (Set & Lighting Designer) & Jeff Chief (Costume Designer), The Ministry of Grace; Tracey Nepinak (Actor), YAGA; Anton Lipovetsky (Actor, Singer, Musician & Musical Director), I Think I’m Fallin’: The Songs of Joni Mitchell; Christine Quintana (Playwright), As Above.
