DAY 1
Join us for a powerful intersection of poetry, performance, and readings that showcase local Black voices. This multi-media event features poetry by Fatima-Ayan Malika Hirsi, a poignant piece by Thembie Moyo, “I am not lazy, I am just in a self-care mode,” and a performance by Pardon, “From Africa to America in Search of my Dream.”
DAY 2
A dramatic reading of “LOZIKEYI- The Queen Revolt” featuring Ngqa Moyo, Faith Dube, Tory Jones, and Lesedi Mugwagwa, narration by Thembie Moyo and poetry by Fatima-Ayan Malika Hirsi.
Experience the richness and strength of Black storytelling through music, poetry, and theatre. Voices on Stage is a must-see celebration of Black voices and creativity.
BIOGRAPHIES
Thembie Moyo is an award-winning writer, storyteller, and producer who works across genres. She is a mother of two who was born and raised in Zimbabwe. She is currently in her final year of the MFA in Creative Writing at the University of British Columbia. Her body of work includes shows such as A Moment with T, The Solo Traveller, and plays such as I Want to Fly, Who Said I Don’t Want to Dance, and The Prophetic Place. She is also working on a memoir.
Tori Jones is a multidisciplinary artist specializing in visual and performance-based arts, living and working as a guest in the unceded territories of the Lekwungen peoples. They are noted in the community for their efforts to uplift local art and artists.
Fatima-Ayan Malika Hirsi is a Black mother and a writer who spends time with forests and waters on unceded lands of the T’Sou-ke Nation. Her poems live in Obsidian: Literature & Arts in the African Diaspora, wildness, MAYDAY, Torch, Elysium Review, Rise Up Review, and other portals. She is a fellow of the Pink Door Writing Retreat, the Anaphora Arts Writing Residency, In Surreal Life, and Abode Press. Her first full-length poetry collection, DREAMS FOR EARTH, arrived in 2025 from Deep Vellum.
Lesedi Mugwagwa is a young thespian whose interests span across theatre and film. She is a part of The Story Theatre Youth Program.
Ngqa Moyo is an artist practicing in Victoria with a strong passion for the arts industry. He loves ‘IsiCathamiya music’, a South African a cappella singing style known for its soft, “tip-toe” harmonies. An avid reader of Nguni novels, he draws inspiration from literature to deepen his understanding of his Southern African cultural background and heritage. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy, a Master’s Degree in Management, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resource Management. He blends his academic background with his artistic interests to explore and celebrate cultural narratives through music.
Faith Dee is an underground artist based in Victoria. She does a lot of voice-over work and dreams of performing theatre on bigger stages. Her interests lie in historical pieces.
Pardon is a writer/ storyteller/ speaker, and performer whose work has been presented across the U.S. and Canada.
