We launch the season with the English-language premiere of From Alaska. Quebecois playwright Sébastien Harrisson’s award-winning script, translated by Leanna Brodie, is a magical exploration of love and grief. When a retired librarian is held hostage by her tough-talking teenage neighbour, they gradually discover what they have in common: that the one they love most in the world has gone away.
Writer and director Jani Lauzon returns to the Belfry with 1939 — set in the year that King George VI visited Canada. When rumour reaches a Residential School that they may be on the royal itinerary, five Indigenous students are tasked with preparing a performance of All’s Well That Ends Well for the King. As rehearsals proceed, they find parallels between their lives and culture and Shakespeare’s script — and make the play their own.
Behind the Moon, by award-winning Canadian playwright Anosh Irani, takes us the Mughlai Moon restaurant in Toronto, where Ayub cooks and cleans and waits for a permanent residency that never seems to come — until the arrival of a mysterious stranger gives him the clarity he needs to confront his situation.
We complete the season with music: If You Could Read My Mind – The Songs of Gordon Lightfoot, by Tobin Stokes & Michael Shamata, who created last season’s Joni Mitchell event. Gordon Lightfoot was a national hero. He was a homegrown star. And now, the legendary singer-songwriter’s timeless hits will fill our beautiful theatre in a concert experience.
Our holiday bonus show is Mom’s The Word: Talking Turkey (single tickets for this show will go on sale at the end of August).
You can renew or buy your season tickets now.
