Show Info

“…part thriller, part revenge play and lots of comedy.” Toronto Star

“A dark and devious comedy…her plot is a cunning labyrinth…” Globe & Mail

A gruesome murder in a small town.  A female sheriff, a cocky young detective, and a university professor with a taste for younger men.  Multiple suspects, secret lives, and ancient magic.

The Belfry production is a one-of-a-kind collaboration between Indigenous and Ukrainian artists—a celebration of two unique worlds and cultures. The Slavic folktale of the supernatural Baba Yaga is the launching pad for a clever and witty exploration of female power in its many forms.

Why I Chose This Play

I love Kat Sandler’s writing—she is a playwright of fierce intelligence and piercing wit. In her hands, the cannibalistic ogre Yaga is incredibly good company—wry, self-aware, and very funny. A seductress can also be seen as an ogre—devouring her victims. Sandler has woven a stunning play using both these interpretations. Yaga is a comedy, a mystery, a celebration of feminine power, and a dazzling theatrical treat. Michael Shamata

Yaga runs 2 hours and 30 minutes, including a 15-minute intermission. Contains strong language, mature subject matter, and use of stage haze.

This production is supported in part by a generous gift from Dr. Stephen Tax.
