The New Incubator Project 2022 – Call for Submissions
Date posted: October 5, 2021
DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS: December 10, 2021.
Priority will be given to applicants from diverse communities, applicants wanting to challenge their traditional artistic practices, and projects that provide the participants with opportunities to explore new creative territory.
Projects are accepted from both individual artists and independent theatre companies.
The Belfry Theatre’s New Incubator Project aims to encourage and nurture as many of our local theatre artists as possible and places creative exploration at the heart of the program. In 2019, we accepted nine separate projects into the program, making for a larger and more diverse Incubator Project than ever before.
Participation in The New Incubator Project promises the use of either the Belfry’s BMO Studio Theatre or Studio B as a workshop and rehearsal space; mentorship from Artistic Director Michael Shamata and the Belfry’s Manager of Community and Artistic Connections, Matilde Cervantes, as well as other members of the Belfry staff as requested; use of the Belfry Tower as a writing studio; and participation in the second year of The Creators’ Circle, a “playwright’s and theatre makers’ unit” facilitated by Governor General’s Award-winning playwright Kevin Kerr.
As in 2020, we hope to feature works-in-development from The New Incubator Project and The Creator’s Circle in an online edition of our annual SPARK Festival.
In addition, plays submitted for The New Incubator Project will be eligible for the newly created Annamaria Bamji Emerging Playwright Award.*
Participants in The New Incubator Project are encouraged to explore their creativity and embrace artistic risk.
Submissions from members of culturally diverse communities are encouraged.
> Please submit an outline of your project or idea. Please explain why you are drawn to this project, what form you have chosen for its realization—and why.
> Please limit your outline to two pages—including a short biography.
> Please articulate clearly how you envision making use of the resources offered, and what kind of mentorship you most desire.
> An interview will be scheduled in order to discuss your proposed project in detail.

*The Annamaria Bamji Award for Emerging Playwrights
The Annamaria Bamji Award for Emerging Playwrights was established in 2021 by Dr. Pervez (Perry) Bamji in memory of his wife, Annamaria Bamji (nee Carnelos), a remarkable patron of the arts, and a dear friend of the Belfry Theatre.
Emerging playwrights between the ages of 18 and 29 (at the time of submitting) are eligible to apply.
This annual award—worth $1,000—will be administered by the Belfry Theatre, as a way of commemorating for posterity Annamaria Bamji’s passion for writing and critiquing plays, and for encouraging young playwrights.
