Victoria, BC…Richard Brownsey, Chair of the Belfry Theatre’s Board of Directors, announced today that Isaac Thomas has accepted the position of Executive Director. Thomas, currently, the Managing Director of Toronto’s Native Earth Performing Arts, will start in mid-June.

Isaac is an arts executive with a deep passion for theatre, particularly new work development, education, and training. He has been a key figure in conversations on equity and inclusion in the arts.

Isaac currently sits on the board of Cahoots Theatre – a theatre for equity seeking artists, as well as the Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts (TAPA). He is a core member of Rising Tides, a national initiative for the advancement of IBPOC arts managers.

Isaac joined Native Earth, Canada’s oldest professional Indigenous theatre, in December 2012 after helming the drama school at Young People’s Theatre, also in Toronto. In the past, he was the General Manager of Theatre Kingston in Ontario.

Isaac was a stage manager for 10 years, working with a variety of theatres including Canadian Stage, Young People’s Theatre, Turtle Gals, fu-GEN, Cahoots Theatre, Modern Times and Theatre Direct. He has been an occasional performer, acting instructor, as well as dramaturg/director of new work.

Originally from Delhi, Isaac came to Canada after completing an MA in English Literature (Delhi University) and an MFA in Acting (Ohio University). He also holds a B.Ed. (OISE/University of Toronto) focused on inner-city education.

“I am thrilled to be joining the Belfry and working with the exceptional team of the board, Michael, and dedicated staff. The Belfry is a great institution, deeply respected for its work and culture, both in the community of Victoria and nationally. I am fortunate to have the support and guidance of Ivan Habel (outgoing executive director), who in partnership with Michael, has accomplished so much at the Belfry. I look forward to building on that legacy. I am profoundly honoured by the faith placed in me and look forward to engaging with the broader community in this beautiful city.” Isaac Thomas

“The appointment of Isaac successfully concludes our nationwide search for a new Executive Director. Bringing Artistic Director Michael Shamata and Isaac together will create an extraordinary partnership that will support the Belfry in achieving its artistic goals and strengthening and growing our community connections.” Richard Brownsey
