How will you keep the love going.

Barbara Greeniaus has loved the theatre since she was a teenager growing up in Montreal and has made it a part of her life ever since. When she eventually moved to Victoria, she found in the Belfry a new home for her passion and has become a devoted patron and supporter. In 1998, Barbara joined the Belfry’s Board of Directors, eventually becoming President, and remaining an honorary member to this day.

“As it’s in our own backyard, we sometimes take the Belfry for granted,” Barbara said. “I love that this professional, world-class theatre company is also such a welcoming place that has always provided its artists with a nurturing environment.”

When it came time for Barbara and her husband, Bill, to plan their estate, she knew she needed to support the causes and organizations she felt so strongly about, especially her beloved Belfry.

“I came up with a list of organizations that have been very important in shaping who I am,” said Barbara. “I want to do everything I can to secure the Belfry’s future. It’s about ensuing that long after Bill and I are gone, the Belfry goes on playing a pivotal role in the life of our artistic community.”

Many of us spend a lifetime contributing to a cause that’s close to our heart. But more and more Canadians like Barbara are going one step further and including gifts to their favourite charities in their Will. The Belfry is proud to be part of the national campaign called Will Power. This campaign is inspiring Canadians to think differently about giving, and consider a gift to charity in their Will, in addition to making provisions for loved ones left behind.

For Barbara, the bequest is a way of creating an impactful legacy. She believes that we need to think about the end of our lives and how we want to be remembered, and she recognizes the need for long-term planning to make that happen.

“There are a variety of ways you can provide support, from volunteering to giving,” said Barbara. “You can mix and match support to the theatre, depending on your means and stage in life. It’s not about million dollar gifts, it’s about giving at a level you are comfortable with to support the Belfry.”
