by Mark on September 30, 2009

The first ever National Summit on Arts Journalism is being held in Los Angeles on Friday, October 2 from 9 am to 1 pm (PST). We are hosting the webcast (one of many arts organizations) right here and you can watch and participate in real time via twitter and chat. Webcast and feeds below.

National Summit on Arts Journalism
At a time when both the art and business of arts journalism are undergoing transformative change, A National Summit on Arts Journalism is being convened to explore some of that change.

The Summit will present a range of ideas and projects representing current thinking in covering the arts. Five projects were selected in an open call this summer that attracted 109 submissions. Five additional projects will be presented representing broad trends in the field of journalism. Presentations will be made in front of a live audience and streamed over the internet.

You can learn more about the summit here - http://najp.org/summit/

Here in BC, Canada our government has recently cut arts funding over the next 2 years by 90%. Yes – that’s nine zero. Arts organizations are already withering and dying. At the same time, our traditional media outlets are in desperate financial trouble and staff levels have been drastically reduced.

One of 2 local TV stations in BC’s capital city of Victoria was slated for closure in September and rescued at the last minute by it’s staff and a handful of investors. As a result, arts coverage is nearly non-existent. And as we all know, less arts coverage = less arts support: we find ourselves in a deadly vortex.

It is imperative that we explore ways in which we can revive and redesign arts journalism, as this is key to the very survival of our arts community. This summit could not have been more timely – thanks for offering a glimmer of hope by shining a light on some very innovative ideas.
