Debra Skelton is a mature professional actress returning to the stage after some years in retreat. She has enjoyed a remarkable career both as a performer and teach at such venues as the Banff Centre, the Montreal International Mime Festival, Cornell University Theatre Department, and the State University of New York, Plattsburg. She and her partner, choreographer Gloria Perks, taught professional actors in training at the University of Alberta, founded the Academy of Corporal Mime in Edmonton, and toured extensively as The Mime Ensemble until Ms Perks eventual passing in 2009.
On May 31, 2012, Debra returns to the theatre with a piece adapted from their original repertoire of works, called “Sketches from the Diary of an Artist”. It is the story of a painter. As her memories appear on the canvas, so are they relived from girlhood to maturity through Debra’s physical mastery as a mime actress. It is emotionally moving and visually beautiful in its simplicity.
This evening is a benefit for the Artist and is the first of many performances over the coming seven years that will bring these elegant works back into the Theatres at international festivals and with major dance and theatre companies worldwide.
The evening also features a visual retrospective of the artist, the photography of Douglas Ashmore, a silent auction, live music, complimentary hors d’oeuvres, bar service, and conversation with the artist.
All tickets $27.00 at 250-385-6815.
