A celebratory evening of folk/country/roots music in support of Literacy Victoria
May 22, 2012 …Victoria, BC – On Tuesday, June 12, renowned Canadian singer/songwriter Connie Kaldor will perform in a one-time, special benefit concert for Literacy Victoria at the Belfry Theatre. Hosted by Shelagh Rogers, doors open at 6 p.m., and the concert starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $35.
Connie Kaldor is a Juno award-winning artist who has sung for royalty (Joni Mitchell, the Queen) and is a member of the Order of Canada. Her touring has taken her across North America and around the world. She has 14 albums to her credit, three award-winning children’s books/cd’s, a musical, and much more. Her original songs and riveting performances evoke the powerful and unique presence of the Canadian prairies. Witty and serious, down-home and metropolitan, her versatility and talent ensure that she is an artist whose fan base expands with every show.
“A masterful performer, wildly funny one moment, deeply personal the next.” – The Boston Globe
“A musical bard whose music and lyrics have diverse appeal…She’s tough and she’s tender. She sings with love and with anger…indecently talented.” – The Toronto Star
Valdy has been part of the fabric of Canadian pop and folk music for almost 40 years. A man with a thousand friends, from Newfoundland to Vancouver Island to Texas to New Zealand, he’s a singer, guitarist and songwriter who catches the small but telling moments that make up life. Valdy has sold almost half a million copies of his 13 albums, has two Juno Awards (Folk Singer of the Year and Folk Entertainer of the Year), a total of seven Juno nominations and four Gold albums to his credit. And he is a member of the Order of Canada.

All proceeds benefit Literacy Victoria
All proceeds benefit Literacy Victoria, one of BC’s foremost community-based literacy organizations. Every year, hundreds of adults with low literacy skills receive support from it to improve their reading, writing, math, and computer skills. Using specially trained, volunteer tutors, Literacy Victoria is the only regional program offered free of charge to low literacy participants.
Its learners are adults who want to improve their literacy skills in order to enhance the quality of their lives, improve their employment opportunities, and increase their involvement in their families and their communities. Participants range from young adults through senior citizens, and are from diverse community sectors including Aboriginals, immigrants, the homeless and the working poor. Most are in lower socio-economic circumstances and may face additional challenges including chronic health issues, learning or other disabilities, unemployment, addictions and mental health issues. In short, they are individuals with the lowest literacy and essential skills, with the highest need of learning support, and with the fewest community or support options available to them.
