The Belfry’s Mainstage season starts next week with the the English Language premiere of the Quebec hit, And Slowly Beauty…. The new season also includes a new production of David French’s backstage comedy, Jitters; the premiere of Michele Riml’s new play, on the edge; and closes in May 2012 with Yasmina Reza’s new comedy of bad manners, God of Carnage.
“I’m very excited about this season’s playbill,” said Michael Shamata, the Belfry’s Artistic Director. “The Belfry’s mandate is to produce contemporary theatre with an emphasis on Canadian plays. We always aim to bring our audiences unique voices and experiences.”
“Our production of And Slowly Beauty… will travel to the National Arts Centre in Ottawa following its run here, part of our commitment to share our work with the rest of the country,” said Shamata. “I’m also thrilled we can premiere on the edge, which Michele has been workshopping at the Belfry over the last two years. Engagement with new work keeps the Belfry vital, and creates a unique experience for our artists and our audiences.”
“Each season we like to revisit a Canadian classic and this year, in our November – December slot, we’ll produce the very funny backstage comedy, Jitters. I think it’s best described as David French’s love letter to Canadian theatre.”
“My dear friend and former Belfry Artistic Director Glynis Leyshon will return to direct the international award-winning comedy God of Carnage in April 2012,” Shamata concluded.
The Belfry offers a number of season ticket packages with benefits including flexible season ticket packages, savings and free childcare. 2011 – 12 Season tickets, range in price from $83 to $132 for the four Mainstage productions (And Slowly Beauty…, Jitters, on the edge and God of Carnage), are on sale now at 250-385-6815.
