Over the summer we’ve asked our staff to participate in 40 Questions – a questionnaire we ask the actors of each production to fill in. We thought you would like to get to know the different people who work here – some you see frequently, other lurk backstage. First up is our Front of House Manager Jane Broomfield.

  Um… not fluently, a little bit of french

What do you do after a show?
  I am often the last person to lock up & leave the Belfry each show night- I like to experience the empty theatre space, it still holds the energy of the night and feels like a sacred space to me.
What do you do in your downtime?
  I like to read, hang out with my kids and explore our beautiful region!
First paid acting gig?
  Edmonton Fringe 1986
First acting gig?
  I played an evil wizard named Zeno in my Grade 8 school play “King of Ice Cream Mountain”
Your most terrifying backstage incident?
  A cast-mate whispered “Macbeth” to me in the wings just before I went on stage in a production at University. I believed in the superstition and was terrified something horrid would happen….it didn’t 🙂
Your most terrifying onstage incident?
  2 cast members missed their cue and I had to ad-lib on stage until they entered. Felt like forever but was probably only a minute or 2
How many miles do you log a year?
  On my bike: approx 400…. In a car: too many
Strangest job you’ve ever had?
  I got to dress up in a Winnie the Pooh costume at Canada’s Wonderland one year. It was awesome. Everyone just wanted to hug me.
Best advice someone has given you?
  Fear is excitement without breath. Breathe through it.
Best meal ever?
  Mystery meat -roadside stall, Cairo
Best show you’ve seen?
  Ooooh tough question….I’m gonna go with Pericles at the Swan in Stratford-on-Avon.
Best concert you’ve attended?
  Imagine Dragons w/Metric Rodgers Arena
Most inspiring person you know?
  My mother. She is 76 and still rides her bike everywhere. She also has the most generous nature of anyone I know.
Pet Peeve(s)?
  Grammar mistakes – Than instead of then. So irksome.
Five people (real or fictional / dead or alive) that you would invite to a dinner party? Why?
  Frida Kahlo – because I love her verve
My friend Hedley, who has passed on – because I’d love to share time with him again.
Oscar Wilde – because I bet he’d keep the conversation interesting.
Terry Fox – because I admire his courage.
Joan of Arc – I want to know the real story.

  Gary Oldman
What are you most proud of?
  My two children.
The quality you most like in a man?
  Communicative.
The quality you most like in a woman?
  Adventuresome.
Your greatest fear?
  I fear losing the ones I love.
When do you lie?
  When telemarketers call my house and ask for me I have been known to respond with “There’s no one here by that name.”
What is your idea of perfect happiness?
  A hot bath, a good book and no obligations.
