BIG MAMA! THE WILLIE MAE THORNTON STORY
by Audrei-Kairen
July 24 – August 19, 2012
“Richardson captures the essence of Willie Mae Thornton, her deceptive sensuousness, her mix of machismo and sensitivity.” Calgary Sun
Before Elvis there was Big Mama Thornton, recording hit songs like Hound Dog and Ball & Chain, years before others made them famous. Canadian legend Jackie Richardson stars as Big Mama, whose rocky but joyful life came to an end too early. This soulful revue pays homage to this extraordinary blues singer: the godmother of rock and roll. With a vocal style not easy to imitate, only a few – like Janis Joplin – have been able to summon Thornton’s mix of raw power and deep emotion.
HELEN’S NECKLACE
by Carole Fréchette, translated by John Murrell
February 12 – March 3, 2013
“Anyone in need of a reminder of just how good Canadian theatre gets is urged to catch this gossamer beauty…” The Vancouver Sun
“…a tiny perfect play…” Globe & Mail
In the heart of a chaotic Middle Eastern city, Helen, a Canadian, tries to retrace her steps in the hopes of finding a lost necklace. Her journey brings her face to face with the realities of a war-torn city and the many facets of loss.
Fréchette won the Siminovitch Prize for Theatre in 2002. Her plays have been produced internationally.
LET’S MAKE AN OPERA! & THE LITTLE SWEEP
by Benjamin Britten, Libretto by Eric Crozier
March 2 – 10, 2013
Britten wrote some of the most appealing classical music of the last century and was committed to introducing children to the magic of music. Let’s Make An Opera is a play in which we see a group of children and adults write and rehearse an opera; the second act is a performance of the finished opera, The Little Sweep, a touching morality tale that we can all empathize with. In this unique piece, you take an active role as the chorus of the opera. Don’t worry, it will be fun and together we can introduce the children in our lives to the joys of both opera and theatre.
A celebration of the centenary of Benjamin Britten in collaboration with Pacific Opera Victoria
SPARK FESTIVAL
March 11 – 24, 2013
The beautiful chaos of our annual SPARK Festival continues next season with four brilliant pieces from across Canada, including the visually arresting, heartbreaking play ONE by Calgary’s Jason Carnew and Ghost River Theatre; Hannah Moscovitch’s LITTLE ONE, a stylish, provocative little lullaby-nightmare; NIGHT by Christopher Morris and A BRIMFUL OF ASHA, a delightful new play by real-life mother and son, Asha and Ravi Jain, who share the stage and tell this true (and very Canadian) story of generational and cultural clash. 2012 SPARK Festival had many sold out shows – buy your pass now.
